years ago, i was introduced to Scottish pipe drumming on (side) snare drum.
The snares were not of the high Tension variety we see in Scottish Drum Corps, or any Drum Corps for that matter.
The drums I started on were Premier 10 x 14 Premier Royal Scot models w'top and bottom head snares......as the tuning of the pipes went up, so did the pitch of the drums, (well, we tried)
With the invention of the kevlar head, we tried to some success to tension the drums higher, and it would last for a bit.
Till u tried and tune them up, and up, thats when shells started imploding.
Anyway, thus, the high tension snare drum as used today.
After competing in different bands for a few yrs. I was able to go on to teach.
That was24 yrs. ago. I did play w/the local Pipe Band here in town for a bit, but packed it in due to back troubles.
Soooo...they have asked me back solely as a Drumming Instructor....This is cool, as I will be teaching beginners, and the corps, snare drummers, tenor drummers (tuned toms), and bass drummers, and I wont have to slag around a drum. There will be a drum on a stand when needed, but most of the instruction is on drumpad....
It's 3hrs a week, and it is a paying gig, does not interfere w/my drumkit lessons so this is cool.
I am kinda stoked, first practice is this Thurs. Night....looking forward to it..
I do not share this for accolades or for any reason other to share my new gig......
(feel free to chop away, or insert clever kilt jokes as u wish :D)
Gotta go work on my windmill drags, flam combo's, and dragadiddles.

Well I'm not sure what the next build is going to be. I do have a few project lying around the shop. I'm thinking of selling my Ayotte Custom red marble set to build a solid steam bent set for myself but I don't want to loose my shirt on the deal. I'll post pics of the set.

Man if I had my way I would never play a gig without him for the rest of my life......I have never played with a percussionist before and I don't know why....The groove is incredible and the pocket is deep. He has a Masters Degree in Music and is an instructor at a Middle school where he is starting a DCI style Drum Corps Magnet Program in the public school. Great dude and a great drummer.....keeps me on my toes!!
